“Hallelujah! Praise God in His sanctuary. Praise Him in His mighty heavens. Praise Him for His powerful acts; praise Him for His abundant greatness. Praise Him with trumpet blast; praise Him with harp and lyre. Praise Him with tambourine and dance; praise Him with flute and strings. Praise Him with resounding cymbals; praise Him with clashing cymbals. Let everything that breathes praise the Lord . Hallelujah!”
Psalms 150:1-6
The Book of Psalms is and was the Hebrew Nation’s Hymnal. It was divided into 5 books. Much of it was written by King David. Some was old enough to be written by Moses. Some was written by Aseph, one of the Levites, assigned by David to offer praise and worship to God continually in the tabernacle (I Chronicles 6). He was also assigned to lead the choir. Some of the Psalm’s authors are unknown. At the end of each of the 5 books of Psalm is a “benediction”. A benediction is a blessing prayer that is prayed or sung at the end of an event. Psalm 150 is a benediction.
This Psalm models for us and encourages us to in every setting-church or home, under evey circumstance-good or bad, with every availible resources-whether just with the voice or using a full-blown orchestra, TO GIVE PRAISE CONTINUALLY TO GOD!
This is sometimes hard to do. Some days we’re just not feeling it. Some days and under some circumstances, it seems almost insane to praise God (especially when life is hard). This Psalm teaches us that even on the hard days, we should use every availible resource to express our thankss, praise and worship to God.
The New Testament teaches us to do this as well. I Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you”.
The ability to do this comes out of the fundamental belief that God is good and that He cares for me! Though life can be hard, I can rest in knowing that He loves me, has a unique plan and purpose for me and and desires the very best for my life. Think about it!
