“How good and pleasant it is when Godʼs people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaronʼs beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.”
Psalm 133:1-3
This Psalm of David, is very short, simple, yet very expressive in what it says. It is a blessing when we, the people of God, whether its our personal families, our church families or the coorperate, international church, live together in harmony! Doing this not only blesses us, as God’s people, it blesses the world that looks on! Most of all, it blesses God, Himself!
The New Testament, uses two great images to teach us about the importance of the Church-one is the Body of Christ, the other the Bride of Christ.
Together, we-every church-comprise the Body of Christ. From those who pursue the worst of the lost to bring them to salvation, to the very traditional, whose only mission is self-preservation, all churches, who hold Jesus in His rightful, proper place, are part of the Body of Christ. All are necessary to complete the Body and the work of the Church because all are necessary to reach each, individual “somebody”, all of whom were important enough to God to die for!
The second image is the partner of Jesus-the Bride of Christ. Imagine how Jesus longs for His Bride to be complete and ready for His return. Imagine how passonately He would defend His Bride! Image how broken His heart is, when we, His Bride, can’t get along!
The beauty of a harmonious Church is compared to the sight and smell of a newly appointed preist, even Aaron, Moses’ brother, having perfumed olive oil poured over his head at his ordination.
A Unified Church is as beautiful to God as the dew from the highest peak, settling softly to water God’s own city!
If God feels so strongly about unity, think how disunity must break His heart! Think about it!
