“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.” John 1:1-3
Jesus, the Word or very self-expression of God, Himself, was with God from the beginning of time as we know it. Genesis 1:1 tells us that “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. If Jesus was with God in the beginning, it stands to reason that He was working with God from the beginning! But this fact does not have to be left to reason–vs. 3 is clear, “through Him, the Word–Jesus, ALL THINGS WERE MADE!” Just in case we missed it or doubted it, John finishes with, “WITHOUT HIM NOTHING WAS MADE THAT HAS BEEN MADE”.
Remember, the “beginning” was not written for God’s sake–He already was, as was Jesus. God is immortal. We, however, as mortals, need a beginning for our story, so here we find Him, Jesus, our Redeemer, our Great Shepherd, our Conquering Hero, the One Who was “with God” and the One Who “was God” (both vs. 1), RIGHT HERE IN OUR BEGINNING!
Its like the writer, the Apostle John is standing up and shouting out that JESUS IS GOD, always has BEEN GOD, does the WORKS OF GOD, FROM THE VERY BEGINNING. John and Jesus definitely want us to understand exactly Who Jesus is!
Do you know Who Jesus is? Many times, even in gratitude for Jesus has done for us, we somehow lose sight of the fact that He actually is God, Who has always been and Who personally made and carried out a plan to reconcile us, as human beings, back to Himself, by Himself, coming to earth as a human to live among us sinlessly, die among us and rise on our behalf, to win our salvation! WHAT A LOVE STORY!
I challenge you to read and reread John 1:1-5 and ponder about just Who Jesus is! I believe you will be awestruck and inspired! As you think about it, praise and worship are bound to erupt from your lips and heart!
Jesus was not just another cute little baby in a manger. He was and is GOD AMONG US! Think about it!
