TAKE 5-AUGUST 22, 2016

“You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of the parts of your body than for your whole body to go into hell!” Matthew 5:27‭-‬30

Again here, Jesus deals with the heart of sin. He warns not only of the danger of committing the actual act of adultery, He includes WITH audultery, the sin of lust. As with murder, this warning includes everyone! Not all commit adultery, but most commit lust. Lust for Bathsheba, that second glance, over the balcony (roof) of the king’s palace onto the roof of the neighbor’s house where Bethsheba was bathing below, led King David to sin.
The next two verses are stunning! Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. . . And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.” WHAT??? Is Jesus asking us to liturally cut off body parts to eliminate sin from our lives? I don’t think so-there is no Biblical record of any the deciples maiming themselves. But it does, however show Jesus’ attitude about the seriousness of sin. More than that, it shows his attitude about the seriousness of making EXCUSES for SINNING! Such excuses need to RADICALLY be eliminated from our lives. Plainly put-“NO, your EYE or your HAND did not cause you to sin”! We (even Jesus Hebrews 4:15) are all tempted by what our eyes see and what our hands touch”. Its when we, like King David, take that second glance at what is tempting us that we fall into sin! The annihilation of excuses to sin here, is as important as not sining itself! Jesus prayed, “deliver us from evil”. Think about us!
