“Again, you have heard that it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but you must keep your oaths to the Lord. But I tell you, don’t take an oath at all: either by heaven, because it is God’s throne; or by the earth, because it is His footstool; or by Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King. Neither should you swear by your head, because you cannot make a single hair white or black. But let your word ‘yes’ be ‘yes,’ and your ‘no’ be ‘no.’ Anything more than this is from the evil one.”
Matthew 5:33-37
YES or NO? Jesus says to keep your answer simple, then stick with it! He’s refering to the ancient Law about fulfilling yoyr oaths and vows to God. Jesus says these are a very bad idea because breaking your word, especially to God, could be devistating. Jesus, instead says, don’t make an oath at all because it would be better to never make one , than it is to make and break one! Jesus recommends being honest and keeping it simple: yes simply means yes and no means no. Keeping our word is akin to whi we are or say we are. To God, keeping His Word is as important as His very Name (the Name that brings healing, deliverance and under which evey knee will bow someday- Philippians 2:10)-Psalms 138:2.
If keeping our word and truthfulness are so important to God, maybe we should ask the “Spirit of TRUTH to bring us into all TRUTH”! (John 16:13)
Think about it!
