“The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, and their ways are vile; there is no one who does good. God looks down from heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. Everyone has turned away, all have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!”
Psalm 53:1-3, 6
King David, in this Psalm, calls the person who says, “there is no God” or actually, literally translated “no God” a fool! Why? Because all of us are “corrupt, and our ways are vile; there is no one who does good”. Isaiah 64:6 says that all of our very best works on our very best day, are to God, like filthy rags-ugly, smelly, dirty rags! A fool is the person who thinks that God isn’t real and that we, independant of Him, can be innately good. Hebrews 11:6 teaches us that, “without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him”. According to this,
God is looking around to see those who are seeking Him, seeking Who He is and not just what He can do for us!
To dismiss that God even exists, leaves us without hope; without hope for our personal joy and happiness and for hope for the world.
David completed this Psalm by interceeding for his Nation, Israel and by asking God for the coming Deliverer, Whom we know as Jesus the Messiah. “Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When God restores his people, let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!”
God is in the restoring business of His people, whether they are a specific Nation, those who follow Him or even those who have intentionally denounced Him as did those in verse 1. God loves people and gave His all to reconcile all of us back to Himself. Draw close to Him today-He’s calling you. Think about it!
