“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. The Lord has made his salvation known and revealed his righteousness to the nations. He has remembered his love and his faithfulness to Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. Shout for joy to the Lord , all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music; make music to the Lord with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ramʼs horn— shout for joy before the Lord , the King. Let the sea resound, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it. Let the rivers clap their hands, let the mountains sing together for joy; let them sing before the Lord , for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.” Psalm 98:1-9
The writer (unknown) of Psalm 98 knows of the goodness of God and of the supernatural things He’s done out of His goodness. He begins with the advise to sing a new song to God, one that comes from your own heart, reflective of your own experience of God’s goodness. He says with His right (strong) arm and hand He’s worked salvation.
In vs 2, the writer declairs that God has not been discrete in showing off His salvation and displaying His rightness (righteousness)–He’s done that for the whole world (all the nations) to see! The Psalm Writer continues this thought in vs 3 by stating that God has shown His favor to His Chosen Nation Israel (chosen not because of being special-chosen rather to display God to the nations and to reach out to them and bring them in, in His Name) in front of all the world!
Vss. 4-6 advise the readers to shout to God, sing to God, make tons of noise-applause- cheering, clapping etc, as well as playing various musical instruments, like harps and trumpets in our celebration of the great things God has done for us!
The psalmist finishes his song by expanding this thought to everything-physical things like the oceans, the earth, rivers and mountains AND ALL THAT INHABIT THEM-fish, animals and especially people to sound off, sing and celebrate the Lord, His goodness and the things He had done for them and the fact that He will ultimately judge the entire earth and its inhabitants righteously and fairly. He says, ” for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples with equity.”
