“Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a large net thrown into the sea. It collected every kind of fish, and when it was full, they dragged it ashore, sat down, and gathered the good fish into containers, but threw out the worthless ones. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out, separate the evil people from the righteous, and throw them into the blazing furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
Matthew 13:47-50
Jesus continued telling parables to the crowd who had sat down to listen to Him. Remember, a parable is a “story about ordinary people doing seemingly ordinary things, but with a message that has eternal significance”. This parable, howerver, seemed a liitle more serious.
Jesus said the Kingdom of heaven was like a large net used to catch fish. The net was hauled in with many kinds of fish aboard. Once ashore the fish were sorted. The good-those that were marketable to the fishermen, were processed to be sold. Those that were bad-non-edible or marketable, were thrown out.
Jesus then interpreted His parable to the listening crowd (Jesus usually left His parable for interpretation by the crowd and interpreted, if necessary, to the disciples). Not this time- this time Jesus spoke very clearly. He said the end of time would be like this: the angels would separate the evil from the righteous. The evil would be thrown into the “furnace” where there would be eternal weeping and gnashing of teeth. We call this place “hell”. In all of our teaching about the goodness of God, its often hard to teach about hell. How could a good God send someone to such a horrible place? The answer is that He doesn’t.
Unlike fish in a net, some good for food by nature, others either untastely or too gamey, or even poisonous, people have choices. God extends forgiveness and freedom to people while fish are just fish, so here’s the deal: like the fish, gathered and hauled to shore together, God gathers and draws all people to Himself, and eventually to His judgement throne together. In my mind, that’s God giving EVERYONE EVERY chance to repent and come to Him.
God didn’t create hell for humans. Jesus clearly taught this when He said,
“Then He (Jesus) will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!”
(Matthew 25:41)
Hell is a final destination for the devil and those angels who followed him when he rebelled against God before mankind was ever created! (Isaiah 14:12-15) No, God created hell for those rebellious devil and demons-He created paradise (originally called the Garden of Eden) for people!
God’s doesn’t send anyone to hell-His will is that none should go there (2 Peter 3:9), but as the pinical of His creation, He gives us the CHOICE of LIFE with Him forever or DEATH without Him forever-that’s called hell. While the Bible clearly teaches that hell is incredibaly dark and torturous, with a tormenting, everlasting fire, an incredible thirst and the ability to see what one could have had in heaven (Rev 19:20, 20:13-14, 21:8, Matt 13:42, 50, Mark 9:43, Jude 1:7, 2 Pet 2:4), the most strikingly terrifying feature of hell is the absence of the Presence, influence and attributes of God (2 Thess 1:9).
Jesus has already done the work necessary for salvation for us-our part is the simple admission that we NEED Him and embracing Him as our Savour and Lord!
While judgement’s clearly been put off for us to embrace Him–WE SHOULD NOT PUT OFF doing so!
Think about it!
