“Or what woman who has 10 silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it ? When she finds it, she calls her women friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the silver coin I lost! ’ I tell you, in the same way, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:8-10
Jesus continues with the parables (story about ordinary people doing ordinary things, but with a message that has eternal significance). This story was right after the one about the shepherd who leaves 99 sheep to go and find one lost one. This story has a very similar moral or lesson.
So, a woman has 10 silver coins. Since women in Jesus’ day couldn’t hold regular jobs and since women were basically dependent upon their husbands or fathers for their basic necessities, its remarkable for this lady managed to save this much–in contemporaey terms, this translated to anout 30 days wages! How this lady must have skimped and sacrificed to have saved that much!
So one day she notices that one of the 10 is missing. Jesus said, she light a lamp, sweeps the house, and searches carefully until she finds it”! Why? BECAUSE ITS VALUABLE!
So in the story she calls her women friends and neighbors together, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found the silver coin I lost! They most likely drank tea and sat around debating all the ways it could have gotten lost!
Now here’s what Jesus was saying, “IN THE SAME WAY, there is joy in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who repents.” (vs 10)
Again, God’s heart and desire is that “noone should perish, but that all should repent and come to faith in God” (II Peter 3:9)
So, if God regards us as valuable, worth seeking, and has literally laid down His own life to give us the option of being found, as the lost coin was found, then if we’re still lost, its on us!
Call out to Jesus, the One Who loved you and valued you so much that He gave Himslf to save you! (John 3:16)
Think about it!
