“And you know the way to where I am going.” “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” John 14:4-7
So Jesus tells His disciples, “you no where I’m going”. It was clear He’d come from Heaven-it just made sense that’s where He’d return to! But they, especially Thomas retorted, “No, we don’t know, Lord, We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus replies with the sweetest, yet most profound statement–a statement guaranteeing the salvation of His followers! He says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
Jesus says a lot with this statement. First, assuming they’d retained what He’d taught them over and over about He and the Father being One, He first of all, takes on the identity of God the Father. He uses the same words God used to identify Himself with in Exodus 3:14, when Moses asked Who he should say sent him when asked by the Israelite Nation who he was attempting to lead out of Egyptian slavery. God say, “I Am, I have and I will be anything and everything you need”. So Jesus starts with “I Am the WAY”. Everything you need to come to the Father comes thru Me. I Am the TRUTH–Jesus pull no punches. He’s telling the truth bc of His love for us. I Am the Life-I Am the Way to Life. Life that comes thru Me.
“No one can come to the Father except through me,” Jesus continues. Jesus is quite clear about what He means here.
So Thomas, you not only know the way, you know The Way! So do we.
Think about it!
