“Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. There is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.”
Ephesians 4:3-6
So the past 2 days, we looked at what Paul told the Ephesians, and by default us, about living a life worthy of their calling (to/by grace), by extending that same grace to others and by intentionally making every effort to preserve peace and unity in & by the Spirit of God that mutually dwells within each of us, so now he tells us why!
In addition to the Church, Jesus’ Body, being one in unity, and with one unified hope for the future. Paul tells us that, “there is ONE body & ONE Spirit, just as you have been called to ONE glorious hope for the future. There is ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism, ONE God and Father of all, who is over all, in all, and living through all.”
So we are ONE BODY. Just as a human body with 3 arms or 4 legs would be weird, so would a disjointed, church. Jesus’ Body-His representative here on the earth, is comprised of all the churches, which in turn are comprised by various and different human members-us, His Church. He wants us to be one.
Additionally, we should be of ONE Spirit. This is not a problem if we all follow the Holy Spirit, God Himself Who was deposited within each of us. This gives us the same-unified glorious HOPE for the future!
Now Paul expands: there is
ONE LORD: though God has 3 distinctive roles, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, He is One in thought, resolve, mission and purpose!
ONE FAITH: though we as His Body might not see eye to eye on everything, within the realm of the essential doctrines of the Bible-Who God Is, the authority of His Word, etc, we are of ONE. We worship God alone, we receive salvation by grace from a perfect God, Who has expressed Himself through His written Perfect Word, called the Bible.
ONE BAPTISM: Our outward reenactment or picture of how Jesus took our sin and shame to His grave after dying and rose to a glorious new-life of hope, in Himself!
ONE GOD and FATHER of all: The Creator, King and Lord of the entire earth, Who is the Father of all of us who acknowledge His Fatherhood and Authority in our lives, Who is over all, in all, and living through all.”
GOD IS ONE! Upon believing and accepting His Gift of eternal life through Jesus our Lord, WE ARE ONE with HIM and ONE ANOTHER! Who are you one with today?
Think about it!
