“In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you! ” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” Luke 1:26-33
So, fast forward a few months and we find Elizabeth pregnant and Gabriel showing back up to talk to Mary! He greets her, then gives the news that she has been chosen by God to carry and deliver Jesus, God’s Son, the Savior of the world! Now every Hebrew girl had dreamt and fantasized about being the Mother of the Messiah, and Mary was no exception, but Gabriel caught her off-guard. She was engaged! She and Joseph had plans. Mothering the Messiah would be hard to explain, since she’d saved herself for Joseph! This would be inconvenient! Besides, this angel was one scary dude!
Gabriel had some very important information about Jesus though! He would be “very great” and was to be called the “Son of the Most High”. That’s all pretty cool, but here’s the best part, “The Lord God will give Him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” Now a prospective mom could get excited about this promise concerning her Son! Now Mary had a choice-would she be available to God and embrace His will for her life or choose to continue with her own plans? Mary obviously chose to go with God’s plan, a choice we will celebrate later this month, but we, too, have a daily choice to make: will we go with our plans and our adgendas, or with God’s?
Our choice may not change the history of mankind like Mary’s did, but our choice to be available to God for His service will absolutely change SOMEONE’s future!
Will it be your way or God’s? The choice is yours?
Think about it!
