“There was also a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was well along in years, having lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and was a widow for 84 years. She did not leave the temple complex, serving God night and day with fasting and prayers. At that very moment, she came up and began to thank God and to speak about Him to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.”
Luke 2:36-38
In addition to Simeon, the old man who scooped Baby Jesus up, blessed and worshipped Him, then exclaimed to God that “now I’ve seen Your Salvation-You can let Your servant depart this life in peace” (in other words-I’ve seen Jesus-I can die now), there was Anna! Anna has to be one of the greatest understatements of the entire Bible-check it out! Vs 36 calls her “well alone in years”. It goes on to say she had lived in the temple as a widow for 84 YEARS, after living with him for 7 years! That means that if she was 15 when she married, which was pretty normal, he died when she was 22, which meant she was now 106 YEARS OLD, which is AMAZING, given that the average life expectancy for that day was 45 to 50! The most awesome part of the story is that in vs 37, she’s described as someone who served God night and day! She’s over 100 years young and still serving God! WOW! And God’s timing is impeccable! Verse 38 says that “at that very moment” –the very moment that Mary and Joseph had brought 8 day old Jesus to the temple to dedicate Him to God; at that moment that Simeon was holding Jesus, worshipping Jesus and rejoicing that he’s been allowed to live to be old enough to actually see Jesus–at THAT VERY MOMENT, Anna shows up! She joins Simeon in rejoicing about Who Baby Jesus is! She thanks God and begins to talk about Him to any and all who were looking expectantly for the coming Messiah and basically anyone who would listen!
My prayer again is that when Jesus shows up in my life, that I’ll have the wisdom to recognize Him and that I will serve Him ALL OF MY DAYS– even if I’m 106!
Think about it!
