“Behold, God is my helper; The Lord is the sustainer of my soul. Willingly I will sacrifice to You; I will give thanks to Your name, O Lord , for it is good. For He has delivered me from all trouble, And my eye has looked with satisfaction upon my enemies.” Psalms 54:4, 6-7
David not only praised God because He had delivered him in past and would continue to do so in the future, he praised God because He is God! This particular psalm, however, was written after one of the times God saved David from Saul, who was trying to kill him before he could become king.
Interestingly enough though, David didn’t thank God for saving his skin-he thanked God for sustaining his soul. How difficult it must have been to have already been anointed as the future king of Israel, yet to have the present king, Saul, chasing you all over the country trying to kill you due to his own insecurities! David got discouraged! God encouraged and sustained him!
Therefore, David wrote, “Willingly I will sacrifice to You; I will give thanks to Your name, O Lord , for it is good.” David knew God and willingly served Him even BEFORE God delivered Him!
David finishes the Psalm with an affirming, “For He has delivered me from all trouble, And my eye has looked with satisfaction upon all my enemies.”
We, like David, have an enemy of our soul (Eph 6:12), who tries constantly to steal from us, kill us and destroy us (John 10:10). Jesus, however, not only took the penalty for our sins on the cross, but permanently defeated our enemy when He rose from the grave! The facts are in-Jesus has defeated our enemy, WE, LIKE DAVID, JUST NEED OUR SOULS SUSTAINED, while we live out our lives and purposes on earth. This sustenance comes partially from constantly offering praise, worship and thankgiving to God!
We can know God like David did!
Think about it!
