“God is renowned in Judah; in Israel his name is great. His tent is in Salem, his dwelling place in Zion. There he broke the flashing arrows, the shields and the swords, the weapons of war. You are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.” Psalm 76:1-4
Asaph wrote Psalm 76. In the song, he compares the fame or reputation of God to that of man.
He begins with starting that God’s Name is renowned or known (famous), acknowleged and respected in Judah and Israel. His tent-tabernacle or dwelling place is in Salem (short for Jerusalem) and Zion (another word for Jerusalem). God was well known, even talked about among His people. Who He is, what He desired and required we considered when His leaders made decisions and when His people lived out their lives. GOD WAS VERY REAL TO HIS PEOPLE!
The next verse explains why God was so famous-because in many cases, God had won battles for them! He had protected them as a people and had fought for them when they had no feasible means of victory! An example of such would be the battle of Jericho, the largest city in the Promised land of Canaan. Though Jericho was well fortified and well armed, by only sending the choir ahead of the army to sing God’s praise, while marching around the City’s wall, God gave the militarily inferior Israelites the overwhelming victory! (Joshua 6) Jericho’s walls didn’t just fall over, they were reduced to dust that Israel’s army simple marched thru! (Read the text!)
Finally, Asaph says, “You (God) are radiant with light, more majestic than mountains rich with game.” He gives credit and glory to the Name and Character of God.
God hasn’t changed! His love for you is the same as it was for the Israelites! He’s on your side and will fight for you like He did them. Maybe your Jericho is a relationship or addiction or hopeless financial situation–God will defend you and give you victory, just like He did for them, if you’ll call to Him today!
Think about it!
