“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” John 1:1
“In the beginning was the Word.” The 1st century Jews lived in a very diverse world. They, as Jews, held to their Hebrew customs and Laws, as they were allowed to by their conquorers, the Romans, who customarily conquored and taxed the cultures they captured, but leaving their culture and religious systems in tact. They, in turn, had been influenced by the Greeks, whom they had also conquored and who had been the dominate society, prior to Roman rule. The Greeks were way into philosophy, and believed the best way to leave your personal legacy on the world was to leave a written book or “word”–in Greek, a “logos” or expression of oneself, explaining who they were and what they belived-what their philosophy was.
With that in mind, John 1:1 proclaims, “In the beginning was the Word . . .”God’s expression of Himself, the One Who bore His Image. In other words, JESUS WAS GOD’S MESSAGE TO US OF WHO HE IS AND WHAT HE WANTS TO SAY TO US!
Better yet, from the beginning, the Word-Jesus was with God and WAS GOD!
John pulls no punches from the start of his book in revealing Who Jesus really was-GOD IN HUMAN FORM! GOD, THE EXPRESSION OF HIMSELF TO US. GOD, THE MESSIAH.
In the beginning was JESUS! Think about it!
