“Hear my cry, O God; Give heed to my prayer. From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a refuge for me, A tower of strength against the enemy.” Psalms 61:1-3
This is one of my personal favorite passages about crying out to God! In Psalm 63, David is again crying out to God. He asks God to hear his cry and pay attention to his prayer. Notice his location as he calls out to God . . .”the ends of the earth” . . .obviously what was out of his norm and comfort zone! But check out the wording for the this verse “when my heart is faint”. The old King James version reads, “when my heart is overwhelmed”. . . How many times in life do we find ourselves in an overwhelming predicament? Often! But here’s the key, David continues, “when my heart is faint or overwhelmed, LEAD ME TO A ROCK THAT IS HIGHER THAN I!” He’s speaking of God Who is ALWAYS stronger, greater and higher than us! He continues, speaking of the past, “for You (God) have been a refuge for me, a Tower of strength against the enemy”. A refuge is a hiding place or a sanctuary to rest in. In this case, its location is a tall tower. A tower too tall to climb, too tall to pursue; a tower that was strong that protected David from his enemy. Why was David so sure that God would protect and save Him? Because, He had before and because He knew God was stronger and higher thsn himself! Sometimes we miss out on the beauty of God’s strength because we’re trying to be the strong ones! Stop! Cry out! Let God be God! He is still that Tower of strenghth! Think about it.
