“Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commands and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:17-20
Jesus never came to destroy the Law of God but to bring it to fullness. He tells us in fact, not to break it, but in effect to celebrate Him instead. His Presence within us, Holy Spirit will ALWAYS work out God’s Law within us!
Here’s the deal, Jesus said at the end of this passage, that unless “your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” My, what is serious statement- because the scribes and Pharisees kept the Law, they just kept it with very little personal love and devotion to God – in other words, they kept it for the sake of the Law itself instead of out of love for the God who wrote it! Jesus said that He came to fulfill the Law. He is the LOVE behind the LAW! Jesus Himself, fulfilled the Law out of love and respect for his Heavenly Father. He wrote it several centuries before to show us what a follower of God should look like. He also wrote it so that we could see in and of ourselves, had no chance of keeping it. (Galations 3:19-26) His love within us – a Love that He shows to us and a love that He loves people through us, enables us to keep His law. We too, must be sure that our Law keeping-our righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees. If we don’t love both God and others, we will never inherit the Kingdom of Heaven. His perfect Law is kept accordingly. Think about it!
