“How abundant are the good things that you have stored up for those who fear you, that you bestow in the sight of all, on those who take refuge in you. In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues.
Love the Lord , all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full. Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord .” Psalm 31:19-20, 23-24
Psalm 31 is a Psalm by David that deals with the realities of life. David’s life was pretty messy. Twice, he spent a year or so running and hiding from people who were trying to kill him. He was a warrior who often led his army into battle and who had the blood from the battle on his hands. He committed the sins of adultery and murder. David had many opportunities in his life to need clesnsinf, forgiveness and restoration. David often needed God to protect him and intervean on his and his company or nation’s behalf. Its is out of these life experiences that David writes Psalm 31.
In theses verses, he talks of the abundance of good things that God has stored up for those people who fear (live and worship God) and of how God seems to always find a “high profile” way of giving these rewards to those who take refuse in God at just the right time!
I especially love the next verse: “In the shelter of your presence you hide them from all human intrigues; you keep them safe in your dwelling from accusing tongues”. In the shelter of Your Presence. . . David had a wonderful thing in knowing that He could take refuge from the world and had a place to hide from all who pursued him, but its amazing to know that this “refuge”, this “strong tower” this “hiding place” was the very presence of God Himself! Though David literally had to hide in cliffs and caves sometimes, in reality, most of the time he was hiding in plain sight-He was hiding spiritually, emotionally and physically in the presence of God, Himself. DAVID TRUSTED GOD! He trusted Him with His life! God had REPEATEDLY proven His TRUSTWORTHINESS to David. They were in a relationship!
David finishes his psalm/song by encouraging his readers to LOVE the Lord snd to put their trust in Him and to be strong in Him, for God is trustworthy and will protect those to are all in! Who are you trusting today? Who is protecting you? Who perserves you emotionally from lifes harsh realities? God is the same now as He for David back then so TRUST HIM! HIDE IN HIM! COMMIT TO HIM! Let Him prove Himself to you as He did to David! Think about it!
