“Bless the Lord , O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord , O my soul, And forget none of His benefits; Who pardons all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases; Who redeems your life from the pit, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion; Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle. The Lord performs righteous deeds And judgments for all who are oppressed. He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the sons of Israel.”Ps 103:1-7
What an awsome, marvoules Lord! That’s what was on David’s mind when he wrote Psalm 103. First of all, we need to understand the word “bless”, because to most of us are directed by God TOWARDS US, as they are in the first few verses of Matthew 5. “Bless” here is the Hebrew word “barack” (ba·ra·chi) meaning to give praise to by kneeling to in submission to. So with everything: outwardly-in kneeling and inwardly-with all of my heart, soul and mind, I WILL PRAISE AND HONOR GOD, GIVING HIM HIS RIGHTFUL PLACE AS LORD!
“Bless the Lord , O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord , O my soul, And forget none of His BENIFITS. . .”
1. Who pardons all your iniquities,
2. Who heals all your diseases;
3. Who redeems your life from the pit,
4. Who crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion;
5. Who satisfies your years with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle.
Why wouldn’t I want to love and serve God if this is His benefit plan? He forgives, He heals, He redeems, He loves and Be satisfies! What other relationship or even benefits package does all of that?
David further says God performs righteous deeds for the oppressed and judges their oppressors, but verse 7 is what I want us to think about! “He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the sons of Israel.” God is SO GOOD that the former list of benefits are classified here as “acts” or “deeds”, generally and generously given to those who worship God! This also says He made known His WAYS to Moses! Now Moses in Bible history is regarded as the “friend of God” or someone God knew “face to face”. (Deuteronomy 34:10) David’s list of benefits or deeds here are to be experienced as only the elementary levels of knowing God like the Nation of Israel knew Him. But David writes that Moses (who encountered God face to face) knew God’s WAYS! He knew WHY God did what He did and he knew in advance when He would do them! MOSES KNEW GOD! He spent time with God! He spoke personally with God! THIS IS HOW I DESIRE TO KNOW GOD! How about you?
Think about it!
