TAKE 5–DECEMBER 18, 2016

“When the eight days were completed for His circumcision, He was named Jesus — the name given by the angel before He was conceived. And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were finished, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (just as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every firstborn male will be dedicated to the Lord) and to offer a sacrifice (according to what is stated in the law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons).
Luke 2:21‭-‬24

According to Hebrew law and custom, on the 8th day of a male baby’s life, he was taken to the temple or tabernacle, circumcised and dedicated to God. Circumsision was a sign or mark, given by God to Abraham, showing the Hebrew Nation’s loyalty to and dedication to God. Ceremonially, it showed that the outer person or flesh was subservient to the inner person or spirit. This mark, descritely placed, descouraged pride about one’s standing with God.
So, Jesus was dedicated to God, by his parents, on His eighth day of human life.
Interestingly enough, the offering that accompanied them-2 doves-not a lamb or a cow, but 2 small birds, shows us the humility of Jesus’ small family, as this was the most meager offering a family was permitted to give.
This is great news for us as it shows us that Jesus is and was the King given for everyone-rich and poor alike! It also shows us thay we don’t have to be rich to give ourselves and our offerings to God. Best of all, it shows us that Jesus can truely relate with us as fallen humanity. He was born into a poor family. Joseph, His earthly dad, died when He was young, so He understands the plight of single parenthood. Jesus faced the same temptations we do, so He understands our what we go thru (Hebrews 4:15)! JESUS CAME FOR ALL PEOPLE! JESUS CAME FOR YOU! HE IS OUR HOPE-OUR GOOD NEWS!

Think about it!
