“Send Your light and Your truth; let them lead me. Let them bring me to Your holy mountain, to Your dwelling place. Then I will come to the altar of God, to God, my greatest joy. I will praise You with the lyre, God, my God. Why am I so depressed? Why this turmoil within me? Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.”
Psalm 43:3-5
Ever talk to yourself? David did! Ever question God? David did that too! This psalm, start to finish, finds David questioning God for rejecting him, then ends with David reminding himself, his soul or innerself, to stop being depressed and in turmoil, and instead to “put your hope in God”! Was David crazy? Nope, David was NORMAL and real!
In my estimation, in vs 3, David is asking for none other but Holy Spirit (light and truth) to be sent to bring him into God’s presence (God’s holy mountain/dwelling place).
David then acknowlegdes that God Himself is David’s greatest joy-let me remind you that David was the King of the greastest Nation on earth at the peak of its historical apex, with innumerable amounts of money, fame, power and women at his disposal. He choose God, Whom he calls his “greastest joy”, as his Consoler on a day when he’s depressed and in despair!
Finally, as he finishes his psalm-as he finishes reminding himself to trust in God, even through his depression and turmoil, David adds, “for I will still praise Him, my Savior and my God.” What faith in God’s Presence! “Today might be rough. I may be doubting God in my despair and depression, but I’m still choosing to praise Him”.
You know, if God never does another good thing for us as long as we live, what He’s done for us already is enough to give us the need and even the obligation to praise and thank Him indefinitely! David knew this! David lived this! How about me and you?
Think about it!
