“Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion. It cannot be shaken; it remains forever. Jerusalem — the mountains surround her. And the Lord surrounds His people, both now and forever. The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice. Do what is good, Lord , to the good, to those whose hearts are upright. Peace be with Israel.” Psalms 125:1‭-3,5
The writer of Psalm 125 had taken to heart God’s promises to always protect His people, Israel. Its capital city, Jerusalem, also called “Mt Zion” is used as the writer’s primary example in this Psalm. He compares “those who trust in the the Lord” with Mt Zion-in that believed it was shakable and unmoveable.
Just like the mountains surround (and protect) Jerusalem, the Lord surrounds and protects His people, both now and forever, never to be ruled by another (so long as we, as righteous people, trust in the Lord).
He asks God to do good for those whose heart is upright (both his readers and Jerusalem). He ends the Psalm with a “Shalom”–“peace be with Israel”.
Our issue, or Israel’s for that matter, is not and issue of God’s faithfulness, but that of our own. How do we trust God unconditionally? How do we become “righteous” and “upright in heart”. WE CAN’T–I’VE TRIED AND FAILED!
God has provided a way for us through Jesus, our Lord. When Jesus died on the cross for us, He exchanged our “coat” of unrighteousness, for His “coat” of rightness, goodness and trust in God. Our “coat” that He wore to the cross was stained with our sins, failures and attempts a living better. The coat He gave us is perfect, faithful and sinless, only He wasn’t just asking us to “hold my coat while I die in the cross”, He was giving us HIS COAT AS A GIFT FOR KEEPS! ALL we need to do to please God and live under His blessing is to ACCEPT JESUS’ GIFT to us! By the way, He’ll keep our “sin coat” as well as part of the trade!
