“Lord , You have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord . For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise You because I have been remarkably and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful, and I know this very well. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.” Psalms 139:1-4, 13-14, 23-24
Written as a prayer/song by King David, Psalm 139 is one of the most quoted psalms in the Bible. It opens with an admission and celebration of God’s “omnipresence” (His ability to be everywhere at once), “omniscient” (His ability to know everything) and our inability, as human beings, to hide ourselves from God! David writes, “God, You know me. ‘You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways.”‘
David knew that God knew! He knew there was NOTHING hidden from God, not even secret thoughts. In fact, David goes on to say, “You, God, know what I’m GOING say and do”, when he writes, “Before a word is on my tongue, You know all about it, Lord.” The fact is that God DOES KNOW us inside and out! He knows all about EVERYTHING we’ve ever thought or said or done. While some of us get quite defensive about this issue, what’s absolutely ASTOUNDING to me is that God WANTS to know all about ME! Of all the 7.5 BILLION people on our planet, God is kneely aware of ME! He’s kneenly aware of YOU, too!
David goes on in this psalm, “For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb” (vss 13-14), and
“Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in Your book and planned before a single one of them began.” (Vs 16)
David knew that not only did God know WHERE he was at all times, WHAT he was doing at all times, what he WOULD think, speak and do at all times, that He (God) had pieced him (David) purposely together in his mother’s womb AND HAD A PLAN FOR HIS LIFE!
The fact of the matter is that God created YOU ON PURPOSE and with PURPOSE and with a PLAN for you, NOT so that He could control you BUT SO THAT HE CAN BLESS YOU! God didn’t want pre-programed robots, or He would have built some! He wanted a RELATIONSHIP and that why He designed YOU to be you!
David finishes his psalm with, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.” He asks God to search him, not because God didn’t already know him, but because David wanted everything within him to please and honor God and he wanted nothing within him to dishonor God. David wanted NOTHING: his secret thoughts, his attitude, his tendencies, his plans and ambitions–NOTHING, to stand between him and God!
Throughout history, mankind has tried hiding from God and hiding things from God! This tendancy was the first visible fruit of original sin in the Garden of Eden-Adam and Eve tried to hide from God’s presence (Gen 3:8-10). We’ve been trying to hide from or hide things from God and each other every since–its in our nature to do so! The only problem is that God, by nature, is All-Knowing and All-Present. Improperly said, “God cannot not know”! Consequently, we, like David should completely open ourselves up to our good and loving God! Let Him take care of the issues we have, the past mistakes we’ve made and even our thoughts and intentions! God’s not a cosmetic kill-joy, He’s a benevolent Creator Who’s only intent for you is to bring joy!
Think about it!
