“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created. Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men. That light shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.” John 1:1-5
“In the beginning was the Word”. . . How close these words of John are to those of Moses in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God . . .”. Similar indeed, because though penned by 2 very different men, recording history that spanned over 4,000 years, the Author Who inspired both men to wrote is the same! While some argue that while on earth, Jesus tried for disguise His Godness or Diety, I argue that He SHOUTED it, especially as His story is told by one of His best friends, the apostle John.
John begins his account of Jesus’ life by intoducing Him as “The Word”. In Greek culture, every sophisticated, renowned person wanted to leave their mark, story or imprint on the culture. They called this their “Logos” or “word”. It was their expression of themselves, left for others to read and contemplate. So when John writes, “In the beginning was the Logos or Word”, he was clearly identifying Jesus as God’s Message to mankind or His expression of Himself to mankind! Then he continues . . .
•the Word was with God
•the Word was God
•the Word was with God
in the beginning
•all things were created
thru Him
•apart from Him not one
thing was created
that has been
created
COULD JOHN SAY IT ANY MORE PLAINLY? Jesus IS God and has been WITH God since time began!
He continues, “Life was in Him, and that life was the light of men.” Jesus is LIFE-God’s kind of LIFE! And this LIFE was the LIGHT men (vs 4)!
Then John finishes with, “That light [the light given to mankind thru the LIFE present in Jesus’ coming] shines in the darkness, yet the darkness did not overcome it.”
For centuries, the enemy, the Skeptics and the critics have tried to put out the light and have FAILED!
DARKNESS HAS FAILED AT OUT-SHADOWING THE LIGHT!
Remember, Jesus saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”? He means this very light-a light that OUTSHINES all the darkness of sin snd the world!
Jesus further said, “You are the light of the world” (Matt 5:14) By you, He means US, HIS CHURCH, those in whom His Light has shone and whom His Life has rejuvenated. We are to shine HIS LIGHT like a lamp in a dark room or a city lit up on a dark night! (Matt 5:15-16)
We are to show His LIGHT to a dark world that looks on!
So SHINE! LOUD!
Think about it!
