“The Word became flesh and took up residence among us. We observed His glory, the glory as the One and Only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John testified concerning Him and exclaimed, “This was the One of whom I said, ‘The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me.’ ”) Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness, for the law was given through Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. The One and Only Son — the One who is at the Father’s side — He has revealed Him.” John 1:14-18
So, Jesus, the Word became flesh. The Word that was in and from the beginning, in Whom and from Whom all things were created. (John 1:1-3) The Word Who brought Life that was the Light of mankind(vs 9)–a Light that so bright that all the darkness in and of the world, could not dim it. (John 1:4-5) A Light, that recieved gave each of us the ability and right to become sons and daughters of God, not just mere spectators in a pious, religous parade! (Vs 12) A Word that was the ver expression of God, Himself to a dark, awaiting world (see day 1).
That Word–Jesus, took on human flesh and lived with us (vs 14)! What a marvelous truth!
Because He lived with and among us, we beheld-we witnessed-His glory. We witnessed GOD’S glory! The kind of radiant glory that only the Son of God–literally God Himself could produce! (Vs 13)
He was the One John the Baptiser (JB) had told them was coming (vs 15)! He was the One that JB had said, “The One coming after me has surpassed me, because He existed before me”. How could JB say that about Jesus? A look at Luke 1 would plainly show us that he (JB, Jesus’ cousin incidently) was born 3 months BEFORE Jesus was born! Is John confused? Is the Bible contridicting itself? NO! John is simply recognizing Jesus for Who He really is: the Pre-existing, Ever-existing, Creator and King of the universe! Jesus pre-existed ALL OF US because He’s GOD! (Told ya John the writer wasn’t trying to hide Jesus’ Godness-Diety (see day 1)!
Then John that cuts to the core of the Gospel. In vs 16 he writes, “Indeed, we have all received grace after grace from His fullness . . .” WE’VE RECIEVED GRACE HEAPED UPON GRACE, HEAPED UPON GRACE . . . FROM JESUS. An unending measure of GRACE! So what is grace? Its FAVOR with GOD that we could NEVER EARN, WORK FOR or be GOOD ENOUGH for!
Its multiple forgivenesses and second chances! Its like a spiritual restart button that sets your game back- on- track instead of taking you back to the beginning! Its an opportunity to have a personal, loving relationship with God Himself without judgement. Its the heart of God and God’s plans for each of us, embodied in His Son, His Message and Messanger Jesus Christ!
Vs 17 says that, “the law was given through Moses . . .” All the Law, all the awareness of our own human failure, all given by God to lead us to the truth that apart from Him we could NEVER be good enough-LAWFUL enough to have a relationship with God (Gal 3:21-25). BUT “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (still vs 17) The reality is all along (through out history) GOD DESIRED to give us grace and He desired to have a relationship with us but when He gave the Law thru Moses, His people, who were suppose to share Him with the rest of the world, got off on touting their ability to KEEP His Law and all of there laws which were made to keep them from breaking His Law and practacally ditched the relationship altogether. But THANK GOD FOR GRACE, which came through Jesus. ALL PEOPLE could come to God!
John finishes this thought with, “none of us have ever seen God, but we’ve seen His glory through His Son, Jesus” (vs 18-my paraphrase)!
We have seen God’s glory!
We’ve been offered Grace, God’s 2nd (and 3rd and 4th . . .) chance thru Jesus. Embrace Him today. Call out to Him and give yourself to Him–He’s all about relationship!
Think about it!
