“Again the next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look! The Lamb of God! ” The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and noticed them following Him, He asked them, “What are you looking for? ” They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are You staying? ” “Come and you’ll see,” He replied. So they went and saw where He was staying, and they stayed with Him that day. It was about 10 in the morning. Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard John and followed Him. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah! ” (which means “Anointed One”), and he brought Simon to Jesus. When Jesus saw him, He said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which means “Rock”).”
John 1:35-42
The next day-the day after John the Baptiser or JB, had initially pointed out Jesus as the “Lamb of God, Who takes the world’s sins away”, Jesus walked by again. Again, JB says this about Jesus, only this time it happened in front of 2 of JB’s followers (disciples) and when JB said, “Look! The Lamb of God! ”, the 2 followers begain to follow Jesus! (JB was obviously a great teacher and had prepare his followers to recognize and follow the Messiah when He came.) So, these 2 disciples begin to follow Jesus. Jesus asks them, “What are you looking for?” They respond, “Rabbi (which means “Teacher”), “where are You staying? Where are you staying? What kind of response is that? I believe these new disciples to Jesus wanted to be assured that Jesus was stable, not homeless-that He was staying SOMEWHERE and that if they followed Him, they’d be taken care of as well! Jesus’ response was simple, “Come and you’ll see,” which they did. They wound up staying there with Him for the rest of the day. Ultimately, they wound up following Him for the rest of their lives!
Another interesting thing is John’s willingness to introduce his own disciples to Jesus, knowing that they would soon become Jesus followers! What an awesome guy JB was-able to see Who Jesus really was and yet willing to lose his own following for the advancement of Jesus!
Jesus’ 1st question to them echos to us as well: “what are you looking for?” Are you looking for a good cause to be involved in? Is your staying with Jesus contingent upon where He is staying and how well you’ll be taken care of, or are you just willing to follow Him? What are you looking for? Are you looking for life – that’s ultimately what they found and what they, themselves gave their own lives for!
Now Andrew (not well known enough on his own, but in vs 40, identified as Simon Peter’s brother), who was one of the 2 of JB’s disciples that followed Jesus that day, goes out and finds his brother, Simon Peter. He says to Peter, We have found the Messiah! ”(which means “Anointed One”)” and the next part of the verse always blesses me: “and he brought Simon to Jesus.” Of all the things we do in the Name of Christ- interventions, lectures and even prayers – this is ALWAYS very effective: simply bring people to Jesus! (Whether literally or in prayer!)
So, Andrew brings Simon Peter to Jesus and this is what Jesus says about him , “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which means “Rock”).”
Imagine the effect that Jesus’ (the One Whom Andrew moments before had identified as the Messiah) statement had on Peter! Peter – the impulsive, rugged fisherman, who spoke before he though; this guy who became an apostle and the father of the modern Church! Jesus’ statement literally changed Peter’s entire life! Peter, obviously became that rock – that person that Jesus said he was that day!
What identity have you taken on for yourself? God says that you are an overcomer, more than a conqueror and a child of the most high God! Don’t take for yourself the label that the world or the devil has assigned you – cling to who God says you are!
Think about it!
