TAKE 5–JULY 20, 2017

“I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life. “I assure you: An hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, so also He has granted to the Son to have life in Himself. And He has granted Him the right to pass judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, because a time is coming when all who are in the graves will hear His voice and come out — those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of judgment. “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” John 5:24‭-‬30

Jesus continues this explaination about how He and God, the Father are One and how He can do jothing on His own. He says if you hear and believe Me and believe the Father has sent Me, you already have eteral life–not judgement! Look at how He says this because its important-He says, “but has passed from death to life”. The present tense verbage He uses here is extremely important–the whole statement is in present tense. In other words He’s saying, “if you believe Me, you HAVE eternal life and if you don’t you HAVE death and judgement”. Many of us rejoice in salvation because we know upon departing from this life, we WILL HAVE eternal life, or, in a non-believer’s case,WILL HAVE eternal judgement. The fact of the matter is this: our belief in Jesus automatically predicates and sets into motion an immediate state of being-either life or death!
Jesus goes on to speak about the future–where there will be a resurrection for those who possess eternal life unto life and for those who live in perpetual death unto judgement (vss 25-29), but here’s the deal: eternal life is a HERE & NOW thing! So is eternal death and judgement. Eph 2:1, 4-5 says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins . . . But God . . .made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!” Eternal life is a here and now thing–so live in it! Enjoy it! But so is eternal death and judgement–so GET OUT OF IT! Believe in Jesus–ask Him to be your Lord and Savior and experience the wonder of eternal life today!

Jesus finishes by repeating, “I can do nothing on My own. . . I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

Jesus, neither did while on earth, nor does He ever do anything seperate from the will, authority or empowerment of His Father. That’s why He was sucessful of living a perfect sinless life as a man. That’s also why He’s been given the responsibility of being our eternal judge (vs 27) because He, as a man, overcame all of the temptations that we face, because He was empowered by the fact that He did only what the Father desired and empowered Him to do and did NOTHING of His own power or desires. He remained in the Father continually!

We have the added benefit of Holy Spirit living in us so we too are empowered to live in eternal life and to do the will of God!

Think about it!
