“Many of the people who were with Mary believed in Jesus when they saw this happen. But some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.” Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about! You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world. So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death. As a result, Jesus stopped his public ministry among the people and left Jerusalem. He went to a place near the wilderness, to the village of Ephraim, and stayed there with his disciples. It was now almost time for the Jewish Passover celebration, and many people from all over the country arrived in Jerusalem several days early so they could go through the purification ceremony before Passover began. They kept looking for Jesus, but as they stood around in the Temple, they said to each other, “What do you think? He won’t come for Passover, will he?” Meanwhile, the leading priests and Pharisees had publicly ordered that anyone seeing Jesus must report it immediately so they could arrest him.”
John 11:45-57
How could you watch a once dead man walk out of a tomb, be unbound from mummy wrappings and not believe that Jesus, the Man Who said “Lazaras, come out”, was the Messiah? Yet many in John’s narritive here had their doubts!
Many people believed because of Lazarus’ resurrection
Some ran to the Pharisees and tattled on Jesus (all vs 46). The Pharisees (religious leaders) and leading preists were so upset by the notoriety that Jesus had gained from His latest miracle (raising Lazerus from the dead), that they actually called a meeting of their high council-called the Sanhedrin, (Israel’s supreme court/legislators) to discuss what to do with Jesus. They said, “What are we going to do? This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him.” (vss 47-48) Were they jeolous of Jesus’ following? Yes! Were they intimidated by Him? Yes, and they totally misunderstood what Jesus was about and He totally condemned their tradition driven, performance-based, powerless religion, opting to operate in the power of God Himself! The high priest even correctly prophesied that Jesus would die for the people, thus predicting His coming crucifiction (vss 49-50). Ultimately, this meeting produced a plot to execute Jesus (vs 53).
When Passover time rolled around (late March/early April) these Pharisees all watched to see if Jesus would show up in Jerusalem again. They even ordered that anyone seeing Jesus should notify them so they could arrest Him (vs 57). So what was Jesus’ crime? Healing the sick? Releasing people from the demons and addictions that bound them? Raising the dead? No, His crime, in their eyes was challenging their lifeless, reglious system and while proclaiming the love of God for His creation and His desire to have a relationship with us! Jesus’ real crime was calling God His own, instead of fearing Him as a distant, uncaring spectator of human affairs.
So Who would you rather worship–a Loving, Living, Compassionate God or an uncaring, unloving, disconnected or even man made God? I choose the One Who loves me and died for my sins on the cross! I choose the One Who loves people, connecting with them and rescuing them from sin! I choose Jesus! What about you?
Think about it!
