“Father, bring glory to your name.” Then a voice spoke from heaven, saying, “I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again.” When the crowd heard the voice, some thought it was thunder, while others declared an angel had spoken to him. Then Jesus told them, “The voice was for your benefit, not mine. The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself.” He said this to indicate how he was going to die.”
John 12:28‭-‬33

So Jesus had already stated that his heart was troubled and that He was tempted to pray, “Father, save me from this hour” meaning being arrested, humiliated, whipped and crucified. But He ends with a prayer, “Father, bring glory to your name” (vs 28). Amazingly and immediately, God Himself spoke from Heaven! Though we often wish God would speak to us out loud, it was only one of a few times in the Bible that He did so.

In this case, a voice from heaven (probably loud and enough to shake that place) said, “I have already brought glory to my name, and I will do so again” (vs 28). God is clear that glory has already come to His Name through Jesus and that He would continue to do so.

Another thing that’s very clear is that Jesus’ desires and intentions matched that of the Father’s. Remember that this whole discussion stated in verse 23 when Jesus states, “Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory”? When and as Jesus got glory, so did God the Father!
Its clear in vs 29 that the entire crowd heard God speak but it DOESN’T say is that the people recognized the voice as being God’s! Some thought it was thunder. Some an angel! Nowhere, however does it say that the people were WOWWED that God spoke outloud!

Jesus then states, “The voice was for your benefit, not mine.” Jesus heard God’s voice all the time. Maybe not outloud-but He heard God’s voice because He LISTENED for God’s voice!

He went on to say, “The time for judging this world has come, when Satan, the ruler of this world, will be cast out.” This was a fulfillment of a prediction that was made multiple times through old testament history beginning with what God, Himself said to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. God said of satan, “he will strike your heel, but you will crush his head” (Gen 3:15). In other words, “satan may harm you in a painful way, but You will injure him with a mortal wound”! The time for that had clearly come because Jesus defeated satan on the cross when He paid off the sin-debt that we owed by taking our punishment for sin and broke the curse of sin by rising from the dead, thus crusing the worst part of the curse that fell upon us humans because of sin. JESUS REALLY DID KICK SATAN’S TAIL ON THE CROSS!

Jesus further hammers this thought home when He says, “And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself” (vs 32), talking about being lifted up on the cross. John, the writer explains this by writing, “He said this to indicate how he was going to die.” WOW! Jesus clearly indicates that He was going to die and that in so doing, bring and end to the curse that plagued us because of sin and etetnally and irreversibly defeat and condemn our enemy, satan!

While Jesus dying on a cross might not seem to us to be the “path to glory”, to Him and God, the Father, it certainly was!

Jesus paid all the price we’ll ever need to gain eternal life–life forever in Heaven that starts with a more fulfilling life right now here on earth! We don’t have to earn a thing! Jesus is our Hero-our Savior! Have you trusted Him with your life? Today’s the day-the time is now!
