“If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Jesus replied, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father! So why are you asking me to show him to you?” John 14:7‭-‬9

Jesus had spent 3 1/2 pouring into these guys called disciples. They had been together day and night. Jesus had taught them everything they needed to know. They’d watched Him pray, teach, do miracles and preach. They knew Who He was and they knew that He was the Messiah. Even so, they didn’t always get that He was God–One with God the Father. They knew He knew God, but often missed He WAS GOD!

So, He’s just answered their concerns about not knowing the way to where He was going by telling them, “I AM the Way . . .” He continues by reminding them that, “If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is.” He’d spent 3 YEARS telling them Who He and the Father was and Philip’s reply now was, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” Its like Jesus said, “WHAT?!? I’ve shown and shown you the Father!” He understands that all of them still don’t understand this and so He “Have I been with you ALL THIS TIME, Philip, and yet you still don’t know who I am? ANYONE WHO HAS SEEN ME HAS SEEN THE FATHER!”

In other words Jesus is saying, “Dude, you’re looking at Him!”

I can’t be too hard on Philip because honestly, there are things God has to teach me over and over before I get it too, but here’s the deal: Jesus REALLY WAS GOD, in human form, come down to rescue us from the curse of sin! Jesus REALLY IS One with the Father in essence, will and mission! Jesus REALLY WILL return to bring us into His Presence someday! While we wait for Him and for that day, our job is to continue HIS MISSION of teaching, healing, being His hands & feet here on earth!
