“Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God.”
John 13:1-3
So the time had come. Jesus had waited for this, prepared for it and prepared His disciples for it. Though many times, people had pushed Him toward this moment and had even tried to make Him an earthly king, He had always responded with, “My time has not yet come”, yet today, just 2 days before Passover, during His 33rd year of life, vs 1 says, “Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father.”
Then John the writer, one of Jesus’ disciples makes a comment that explains why Jesus did what He would do next–John writes, Jesus “had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. It was time for supper . . .” John makes it clear that, although Jesus knew what would happen to Him next, He stayed focused on the needs off His disciples–right now, SUPPER, and that Jesus loved them and prioritized them right up to the very end. .
John ends this thought with 2 more facts: a. Jesus carried on knowing that one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, would betray Him and
b. Jesus carried on, knowing that because ood His “Godness” (Diety)-His Oneness with God the Father, that He was authorized to act on God’s behalf and was in full control of what was going on, even now! He also knew that just as He had come from God, He would return to God!
Jesus, as God, subjected His physical body to our mortality and would the next day, allow Himself to be excecuted on the cross. Jesus, as a man, subjected His mortal body to His Spirit’s immortality–He lived for eternity!
