“All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).” Isaiah 7:14

Isaiah was an Old Testament prophet that lived during the 8th century bc to the Nation of Judah (the Southern Kingdom of Israel after Israel split following Solomons reign-around 930 bc). Part of his prophecies dealt with the theme of the coming Messiah. This is one such passage!

Isaiah said “God, Himself will give you a sign”. God was definitelty interested in what was happening in the world and Isaiah had vision of God’s plan to solve the problem of sin in the world! Mankind had inherited a nature to sin from Adam and Eves original sin in Gen 3. We were all born into sin with a tenancy towards sin! God had a plan to break this cycle, however and this was the sign God Himself, would give: a “virgin will conceive a child”. This was something ONLY God could do because it normally takes a NON-VIRGIN to make a child! Non-the-less, this would be God’s “sign”! We learn in Matthew and Luke that the Virgin Girl’s name was Mary!

Mary would give birth to a Son. She’d call Him “Immanuel”. Immanuel means “God with us”. Jesus, Immanuel, would provide a way for God to dwell so near to us that by His Spirit, He’d live IN us! As we know, God is sinless and actually judges sin! Jesus wouldn’t be Immanuel, if He inherited a sinful nature, so it was absolutely necessary that the sin cycle was broken. That’s why Jesus’ mother, Mary, was a virgin! That’s why JESUS IS GOD and thus the “Way” to God! (John 14:6)

God gave a sign ONLY He could give. Jesus, God in human flesh, was born as a human WITHOUT a heritage of and tendancy to sin and that’s how God Himself, Immanuel, came so near to us that He now lives IN those who acknowledge Him as our Savior!
