“I am the Lord’s slave,” said Mary. “May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel left her. (Luke 1:38)
The virgin birth of Jesus placed Mary in a difficult situation. How could she explain this to her parents and Joseph? She would be the brunt of town gossip and rumors. She said “yes” to God without understanding all it would mean for her. She and her baby would be in danger from the King and other powerful leaders. They would always be the target of people trying to discredit her and Jesus. Even today there are people who refuse to believe in the virgin birth. The rest of Mary’s life would be consumed with being the servant who said, “Yes Lord.” Mary was the one God selected and Mary was the only one selected to be the earthly mother of the Son named Jesus. With Mary’s “yes,” God changed eternity for all who would believe.
God also has work for us. In the same way, it is individual work. God prepares us to be used for His glory in a unique and individual way. With words and actions we need to say, “However I can serve You, Yes Lord!” (borrowed: Preston Collins, Norman, OK)
