“Then Herod, when he saw that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the male children in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men. Then what was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be consoled, because they were no more.”
Matthew 2:16-18
Herod, the King when Jesus was born was known for his psychotic tendencies. One time he saw part of his advisers whispering among themselves and was so threatened that he had them killed for fear they were planning to over throw him. On another occassion, he had his own male children executed because someone innocently referered to one of his sons as the “heir to the throne”. So you can imagine the jealousy he felt when the three magi came from the east, inqiring about the Newborn King. Herod went nuts!
So when he realized that the wisemen had ditched him, he gave orders to kill every male-child, 2 and under, in his kingdom! It’s a good thing God was one step ahead of Herod because these verses, the one directly PRECEEDING those quoted above say . . .”After they were gone, an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to destroy Him.” So he got up, took the child and His mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt. He stayed there until Herod’s death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called My Son.” (Vs13-15) God was all over this situation and had given Joseph instructions about how to protect and preserve Jesus!
Isn’t it great to know God has our situations well-in-hand, even BEFORE they happen?
Think about it!
