“For by their own sword they did not possess the land, And their own arm did not save them, But Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, For You favored them. For I will not trust in my bow, Nor will my sword save me. But You have saved us from our adversaries, And You have put to shame those who hate us.” Psalms 44:3, 6-7
Only one or two generations removed from the exodus of Isarael from Egypt and it’s slavery to becoming a recognized Nation in their promised land of modern day Israel, and the preists-the sons of one the the original preists, wrote Psalm 44. Phenomenally, it sounds just like a psalm of David because just like David, the Sons of Korah gave credit where credit is due-to God!
In reference to Israel, the Psalmists here recognized that God deserved the credit for giving Israel all that she had as they wrote, “for by their own sword they did not possess the land . . . but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, for You favored them!” Korah’s sons recognized that Israel couldn’t save herself-she was in bondage in Eygpt. She wasn’t a military power-Israel was saved by God’s strength, God’s power and led by God’s light! ISRAEL WAS FAVORED BY GOD-that’s why she suceeded!
In verses 6-7, the Psalmists recognized that this principle applied to them as well. Their own weapons couldn’t save or keep them safe, they had to depend on God! They also had to give credit to God.
Two things are at play here. First, the obvious is that we don’t need to, nor shouldn’t depend upon ourselves, our weapons and or own selves to save ourselves. While being prepared is the right thing to do, being arrogant is not! It’s ultimately God’s Light and God’s favor that will save us.
Second, Korah’s sons saw the truth of how God moved and worked their father’s lives and adopted it for their own. We call this APPLICATION!
Likewise, we should see these truths and apply them to our lives. We need God’s favor to suceed!
Think about it!
