“If the Lord had not been on our side — let Israel say — If the Lord had not been on our side when men attacked us, then they would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger against us. Then the waters would have engulfed us; the torrent would have swept over us; the raging waters would have swept over us. Praise the Lord , who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth. We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net; the net is torn, and we have escaped. Our help is in the name of Yahweh, the Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalms 124:1-8
David, the King of Israel, is leading his people in worship as they ascent to the tabernacle to worship. (This Psalm continued to be sung as a “song of ascents” after David was gone.) David reminds his worshippers of God’s blessing and favor, saying, “If the Lord had not been on our side when men attacked us, then they would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger against us” & later, “then the waters would have engulfed us; the torrent would have swept over us; the raging waters would have swept over us.” Isreal, throughout history, has had many enemies, the primary one being satan, himself, trying to oppose God’s mission through Israel. David realized that the Nation would have been long since been stomped out & swept away if God wasn’t fighting for her!
He gives praise to God, Who always rescued Israel or made a way for her to escape, likening it to a bird, caught in a net, escaping through a tiny hole found in the net.
Finally, David exclaims that Israel’s “help” is from the Lord! One of our greatest acts of worship is for us, as independent human beings, to lay down our pride & admitt to God that we NEED HIM! I don’t think much pleases God more!
If you’ve been trying to make your way through life, living independant of God, how’s that working for you? He always provides a way of escape for & fights for His people!
Declair your dependance upon Him today-you’ll experience freedom to its fullest!
Think about it!
