“Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious. Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you. All the earth bows down to you; they sing praise to you, they sing the praises of your name.” Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds f or mankind! He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the waters on foot— come, let us rejoice in him. He rules forever by his power, his eyes watch the nations— let not the rebellious rise up against him.” Psalm 66:2-7
Psalm 66, author unknown, is about the goodness of God. The author begins with, “Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious”. The author had obviously struggled with difficult times (vs 14) from which God had rescued him, so he wants to not only song glorious songs to God, but to elevate God’s Name to the point of being glorious!
Next, the author sings of the awesomeness of the deeds of God. He excaims that God’s power is so great that His enemies cringe before Him-so awesome that the whole earth bows before Him to sing praise to His Name, through majestic mountains, brilliant star displays at night and the sheer beauty of creation. But not only had God made beautiful things, He’s DONE great things for people, as described in the next verse: “He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the waters on foot”, describing the Israelites exit from Eygpt, through a very recently and temporarily dried up section of the Red Sea!
The author ends this section with an invitation: “come worship with us . . .” There has never been a time when God and His word did not invite us to COME! Even in the Old Testament, God repeatedly invited the Gentiles (non-Hebrews) to come. To the last chapter of the last book of the New Testament, God is still invitng us to “COME”. (Revelation 22:17)
